After what seems like an eternity, fans and audiences finally got to see Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) take center stage after eleven years of being a supporting player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The standalone film, “Black Widow” did the impossible by managing expectations of a long-awaited film as well as setting up a new hero and sending off a beloved character. But the film also respectfully and delicately tells the story of victims of abuse, the specific path they faced of being forced to become perpetrators of violence, and the breaking of that abusive cycle.

The story of…

Even though cinema itself has only existed for a little over 100 years, it still has a massive history with an immense amount of genres. The point of cinema is to reflect the life around it and that is just as true for modern cinema as it was for cinema in past decades. One of these moments in history was the punk movement in America and England where ‘punk cinema’ was created as a result. But the concept of there being a ‘punk cinema’ has been up for debate ever since the punk movement ended. If people agree that there…

On March 5th, the final episode of “WandaVision” aired on Disney+ and concluded Wanda’s transformative journey which will continue in future MCU installments. The series finale answered some questions the show posed throughout but also left some questions unanswered which will probably be further developed in the future.

Now, as with most Marvel properties, during the run of “WandaVision,” a lot of theories were made about certain characters in the show. Some of these were confirmed, like Agnes being Agatha Harkness, and others were debunked by the end of the show. …

The American experience has always been a very specific one. It normally depends on one’s location, background, and the reality that makes one’s American experience different from their neighbor. But ever since the country was discovered, Americans have written their perspectives down in order to share their experience with everyone else. Within August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play ‘Fences’, he explores the struggles of the black American family after the second world war. In his play, his characters explain and experience the countless challenges they face simply for being African American in 1957 urban America. In addition to showcasing the black…

As awards season quickly approaches, it is only natural to start predicting who and what will bring home the Oscar in February. Even though it is still early and a majority of the films to be nominated haven’t even been released to the public, cinephiles around the globe have already started their prediction lists. One film that is found on a majority of these ballots is “Marriage Story”, which follows a couple going through a divorce. The film is written and directed by Noah Baumbach and stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in the leads. All three are currently predicted…

How they got it Wrong

In the wake of the fourth wave of feminism and the Times Up movement, it has been a fantastic two years for women, especially in the workplace. Today, every single business organization is looking to hire minority staff. This has become extremely popular in the film industry, mostly due to the popularity and translucent nature of the business. Today, we are seeing a surge of diversity in directors of television and feature films. This was shown last year with Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman which was a “swiftly moving, convincing and legible — and often dazzling…

a surprising modern story

There are a lot of positive aspects coming out of the current feminist movement. For starters, women are finally getting their voice heard, especially in the government. Second, women are not only voicing their want for equality, but demanding it. Across the board, it is the time of the woman. This movement has affected every aspect of our modern lives and also resulted in the allowance for more stories about women to be made. Today, women are the centerpiece, as opposed to having a majority of female characters be supporting players to their male counterparts. We…

As most of you know, Wicked just celebrated its 15th anniversary on Broadway. Since its opening night, the show has been nothing short of a massive success. Wicked has become a household name and is now apart of the cultural lexicon. In addition to Broadway, it can be seen in across the United States, London, Ireland, Australia, South Korea, and even Japan (while still maintaining selling enough tickets to perform in Broadway’s largest theater for 15 years). It is an international phenonom. It’s rare when a staged musical becomes such a cultural hit and transcends past midtown Manhattan. …

Netflix’s Best Show in a Long Long Time

Over the last two years, horror has had quite the transformation. It is no longer a genre where someone in a mask runs around killing people. It’s evolved. Today it genre bends, constantly changing the definition of horror while keeping the audience on its toes. This was shown with horror’s latest two hits Get Out and A Quiet Place, both films that defy the genre while telling a terrifying story. It wasn’t the supernatural, absurdity, or monsters that scared its audiences, but the realism of it.

Netflix’s latest experiment, The Haunting of Hill…

Showcasing the light on Queer Individuals in Hasidic Communities

As awards season starts, it’s important to remember the small films that were released earlier this year. Even though, these films are not likely to receive recognition within the awards circuit, it’s important to appreciate them as much as the films we will be receiving in the next two months.

Disobedience is a film that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2017 and as released in cinemas in the spring of 2018. It follows the story of Ronit (Rachel Weisz), a British woman that goes back home to attend her…
